The following is a recap of local events for this time period throughout history. One of the few remaining people who assisted in harnessing nuclear energy for the development of the atomic bomb visited Shiprock Thursday. Herbert York, 89, worked on the Manhattan Project from 1943-1945 as a physicist. He spent the day giving a firsthand experience of the A-bomb to students at Shiprock High School and Dine College. “He’s one of the last remaining physicists who worked on the Manhattan Project. He played an important part in the country’s history,” said Steve Grey, program manager of Dine College’s Lawrence Livermore Laboratory program.
