4 Songs That Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham Wrote About Their Love Affair

Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham quite famously had a torrid love affair during the recording of the band’s famed 1977 album Rumours. Both musicians have songwriting credits on that album and others, and many of the songs they wrote were about each other. Let’s take a look at four famous examples of songs that Nicks and Buckingham wrote about each other during Fleetwood Mac’s heyday!

    1. “Dreams”

“Dreams” is one of the biggest songs from Rumours, and it also happens to be one of several tracks that Stevie Nicks wrote about Lindsey Buckingham. It’s hard to see the song as a major heartbreaker, though. It isn’t the type of track you’d put on post-breakup to cry to. It’s simply too catchy.

But when it comes down to the lyrics, you can really feel Nicks’ heartbreak in “Dreams”. “Oh, thunder only happens when it’s rainin’ / Players only love you when they’re playin’ / Say women, they will come and they will go / When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know.” It sucks how relatable those lyrics are.

    2. “Go Your Own Way”

Lindsey Buckingham had a tendency to be a little less nuanced about resentment in his songwriting than Nicks. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s a ferocity to much of the music he wrote for Fleetwood Mac.

“Go Your Own Way” is one such example. “Shacking up is all you want to do” is just one noteworthy lyrics that bites, and the fact that Nicks is singing the backing vocals to the song ties the whole thing together.

    3. “Silver Springs”

“Silver Springs” didn’t make it to the original release of Rumours, but it’s since become a massive fan favorite. Written by Nicks, this song is a certified breakup anthem. The band famously performed the song years ago, with Nicks looking straight at Buckingham as she belted the blistering chorus: “You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you.”

    4. “What Makes You Think You’re The One?”

Arguably the most contemptuous entry on our list of songs Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham wrote about each other, “What Makes You Think You’re The One?” feels like an angsty entry from Buckingham’s diary.

The track was clearly written about Nicks and displays Buckingham in a vulnerable, almost insecure place as he shouts about how she doesn’t matter at all to him. It’s dramatic, to say the least, but it’s still a great piece of work.
