He doesn't miss. Today, Cody Jinks re-released his fan-favorite 2012 album 30 , after having it remastered by Adam Grover and remixed by Nick Choate, in a project called Backside of 30 . 30 was originally recorded at Rosewood Studios in Tyler, TX and Blue Smoke Studios in Ft. Worth, TX, and encapsulates Jinks' Texas roots and highlights his signature southern sound. He says it was a special project and "big step" for his writing and he wanted to give it new life over 12 years later: "I really love the 30 album, I feel like it was a big step up for me in my writing and it was time to remaster, add a new one, and re-release."
Backside of 30 features all of the original songs, as well as a new one called "When the New Wears Off," which was produced by Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, ZZ Top) along with Jinks’ longtime bassist Joshua Thompson. Frankly, "When the New Wears Off" is already one of my favorite songs he's ever released and the perfect addition to this record, which finds Jinks reflecting on time and aging. He may no longer have the youth and the carefree ease that comes along with that chapter when everything is "new," but he has experience and perspective now that allows him to embrace exactly where he is, which is worth more than anything money can buy: "You are so beautiful right now I could never imagine how beautiful you will be someday
When the new wears off Of a house and a car Nothing’s gonna change the way I feel in my heart And if time stood still For a million years My love for you would only go that far So let the new wear off" A timeless, poignant message and Cody at his best when it comes to songwriting. Of the new release as a whole, Cody says putting the re-release out now just felt right: 'I really love the '30' album, I feel like it was a big step up for me in my writing and it was time to remaster, add a new one, and re-release." Of course, Cody put out a great album called Change The Game
earlier this year, and I'm a firm believer that a good song is a good song no matter what decade you hear it in, and seeing as Jinks is one of the most talented artists in the world of both independent and mainstream country, his timeless songs are as relevant as ever in 2024. Plus, when an album is as important to an artist as 30 is to Jinks, it's easy to see why he wanted to go back and make these songs even better and tweak it exactly how he wanted it after years of experience and honing his craft. I'd start with the new song on the tracklist, though.
