    Surrounding counties see drops in unemployment numbers

    LIMA — Area counties saw improvements in unemployment rates in August, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

    Putnam County has the lowest employment rate in the area at 3.1 percent. The rate dropped from 3.6 percent in July. The current workforce consists of 19,600 people, with 600 being unemployed. Putnam County has the third-lowest unemployment rate in the state.

    Auglaize County has an unemployment rate of 3.3 percent, good for second in the area and fifth in the state. The rate dropped from 3.8 percent in July. There are 25,000 people in the workforce, with 800 being unemployed.

    Van Wert County has an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent. The rate dropped from 4 percent in July. Of 15,000 people in the workforce, 600 are unemployed.

    Allen County’s unemployment rate currently is 4.3 percent. The rate dropped from 5 percent in July. The largest workforce in the area consists of 47,400 people, and 2,000 are unemployed.

    Hardin County’s unemployment rate is 5 percent. The rate dropped from 5.7 percent in July. The smallest workforce with 13,000 people, 600 are unemployed. Hardin is one of 15 counties with an unemployment rate of 5 percent or higher.
