Rece Davis Gives Honest Opinion of Alabama Hiring Kalen DeBoer

    By Spencer Ostrow,

ESPN analyst Rece Davis recently shared his thoughts on the Alabama Crimson Tide’s decision to hire Kalen DeBoer as head coach, succeeding Nick Saban.

Saban, who is considered one of the greatest college football coaches ever, won seven national championships and 11 SEC titles before retiring this offseason.

Replacing him wasn't going to be an easy task for athletic director Greg Byrne, but he quickly brought in DeBoer from the Washington Huskies.

So far, DeBoer has won his first three games as Alabama’s head man. However, he faces his toughest test yet in Week 5 against No. 2-ranked Georgia.

Ahead of Saturday’s matchup in Tuscaloosa, Davis shared his opinion of the DeBoer hiring.

"Tremendous coach," Davis said. "Gets the most out of his players. Creative. Just the way he's carried himself. And having been respectful to what has been accomplished here. I think it was the perfect choice."

Davis spoke about how the Alabama head coaching job isn't for anyone. There's a standard at the University of Alabama, and DeBoer has to follow in the footsteps of Saban and iconic six-time national championship-winning head coach Bear Bryant.

"You've got to be a great coach to be willing, and you have to be confident in your abilities to step in and follow in Nick's (Saban) footsteps because he's the greatest coach who ever lived," Davis added. "Not that there aren't other elite coaches out there, but I think his demeanor and his confidence and his track record made him an absolutely perfect hire."

Before Alabama brought DeBoer in, Davis revealed he hardly had a relationship with him.

"I didn't know Kalen (DeBoer) well," Davis stated. "I didn't know him at all prior to our trip to Washington last year. And obviously, I had no inkling that he would someday be the Alabama coach."

Kickoff between the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Alabama comes in as a one-point home underdog, according to ESPN BET.
