A man has been indicted on suspicion of killing his wife.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (TCN) -- A 46-year-old man stands accused of killing his wife with an ax inside their home last month.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office announced that on Sept. 26, Antonio Prieto was arraigned on an indictment charging him with one count of second-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 28 and remains held without bail.

According to prosecutors, in the early hours of Aug. 26, Buffalo Police responded to a possible domestic incident at an apartment on Rhode Island Street. At the scene, authorities found Prieto's wife, 29-year-old Elibeth Salazar, deceased on the bedroom floor.

The district attorney's office alleges that Prieto struck Salazar with an ax inside their home. Officers located Prieto in the bathroom with self-inflicted knife wounds, and he was transported to a hospital via ambulance.

According to the district attorney's office, Prieto was initially arraigned on the murder charge while in the hospital.

Prieto faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Why only UP TO 25 years? It's 2nd degree murder. Isn't it supposed to be 25 years to life?
