For a majority of the 2024 WNBA season, Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese were in a tight race for the Rookie of the Year award.

However, following the Olympic break, Clark took full control of the race, leading the Fever to a 9-5 record over their final 14 games while winning multiple Player of the Week awards and Rookie and Player of the Month. She also helped lead Indiana to its first playoff appearance since 2016, but her first postseason ended after only two games against the Connecticut Sun.

Meanwhile, Reese and the Sky dropped 13 of their final 16 games, losing out on a playoff spot. The former LSU Tigers star also missed the final six games of the year due to a season-ending wrist injury she suffered on September 6 against the Los Angeles Sparks.

With that being said, on Friday, the Athletic's Shams Charania revealed that Clark has been named as the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Despite their seasons ending early, both rookies had a historic first year in the WNBA. Clark broke many different records, with the most prestigious being the most assists in a single season by any player.

Reese, on the other hand, initially broke the single-season rebounding record, but due to her injury, Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson broke it again a few weeks later. Reese was able to keep her consecutive double-double record.

Following the announcement that Clark won Rookie of the Year, many fans took to social media to say Reese was deserving of the award.

"Well anywayssss.. my ROTY is still Angel Reese and nothing has changed about that, but shoutout to Caitlin," one fan said.

    "Angel Reese deserved it"

    "Should’ve been Angel Reese"

"Angel Reese will always be my Rookie of the Year, because she can score, rebound and play defense also averaging a double double!"

"One day we’ll look back and realize how badly we robbed Angel Reese…"

"They really robbed Angel Reese just cuz she got injured lmao?"

Clark finished the season averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and a league-leading 8.4 assists per game. Reese ended her rookie year averaging 13.6 points and league-best 13.1 rebounds. Had it not been for her injury, she likely would have kept the WNBA the rebounding record.
