Bake'n Bacon, Philadelphia's first bacon-themed restaurant, is Black-owned and operated by Justin Coleman and Kelvin Alexander. This restaurant isn't just serving food; it's revolutionizing the way we think about bacon.Before visiting the eatery, I interviewed the restaurateurs because I had questions like: Why bacon? Why enter the restaurant industry? And what about the people who don't eat pork?When asked what sparked the idea for a bacon-themed restaurant, Coleman said it came to him in a dream. "My younger brother, Derek, passed away in 2016 and he visited me in a dream. And this is how all of this happened, the dream. It seemed so real like I could smell bacon in the dream. It was almost like bacon bread crumbs leading to him, but I could smell bacon."Originating from a food truck venture that thrived even through the pandemic, Coleman and Alexander’s journey to opening Bake’n Bacon was fueled as much by passion as by resilience. "We survived it...if we could survive the pandemic with just being a new food truck concept, then we could do anything," Coleman reflected on the transition from a mobile operation to a brick-and-mortar establishment.Philly doesn't get enough credit for its food scene, and Bake'n Bacon is the latest in innovative dining options. "Philly has so much to offer when it comes to the food scene, and it definitely needs the recognition that it certainly deserves... cocktails, craft beers and desserts," Alexander shares.When you look at the menu, you'll be amazed by the versatility of bacon. From decadent desserts topped with bacon-infused sauces to savory dishes featuring bacon as the main component, the menu delights pork lovers and also accommodates various dietary needs with pescatarian, vegan, and vegetarian options.Drawing on baking skills honed from childhood while watching his grandmothers bake from scratch, Alexander brings an artisanal touch to the menu by crafting desserts and sauces in-house. Although his Trinidadian heritage does not directly influence the menu, it underscores the diverse culinary backgrounds and personal histories that enrich the restaurant's offerings.The restaurant industry is particularly challenging for Black entrepreneurs. According to last year's census, only 9% of restaurants in the United States are Black-owned. For Black restaurateurs, excelling goes beyond just the culinary experience; it extends into the community they serve. Both Coleman and Alexander are passionate about their roles in the community, always aiming to inspire and uplift fellow entrepreneurs, especially those from minority backgrounds."We also believe to show people that look like us, that you know, if we can do it, they can do it as well," Coleman expressed, emphasizing the importance of representation and support within the industry.With plans to expand their space and offerings, including a high-end bourbon and tequila lounge and a dedicated event venue, Bake'n Bacon is well on its way to becoming a staple in Philadelphia’s culinary landscape.<h2>Review</h2>On a bright Saturday afternoon, I headed over to Bake'n Bacon to check out their brunch. After climbing a few stairs and stepping through the door, the ambiance struck me immediately. From the music to the modern, cool aesthetic, Bake'n Bacon definitely has a vibe. I chose a high-top seat across from the bar to minimize the time between the bartender making my drink and the waiter serving it.My first order was the Lick My Peach cocktail. The menu was very intentional, featuring drinks like Morning Wood, Dream of Cream, The BJ and Love Me Long Time, all designed to ensure guests leave satisfied. My drink, reminiscent of a Tequila Sunrise, was enhanced by a hot honey rim, which should be licked before sipping, adding a nice kick to the flavor.For food, I opted for the Can't Pick My Toast, a flight of French Toast options including Bacon Caramel, Lemon Blueberry, Bourbon Banana, and Fresca Crema (Strawberry Cheesecake). All were delicious, but the Bourbon Banana and Strawberry Cheesecake were my favorites.I also ordered a side of bacon—essential at a bacon-themed restaurant. They were good, but another item the waiter suggested stole the show: the turkey burnt ends. I was initially hesitant but they turned out to be delicious, reminding me of beef jerky.My overall experience at Bake'n Bacon was exceptional—great food, superb drinks, and even better vibes.
