when I went to school we kept them in our lockers, purses, and the guys kept them in their pockets we just couldn't have them out during class. My kids now are not allowed to have the phones on them at all. My one kid stays after school because of sports so he turns his phone off and lets it in his bag in his locker so he can call me after practice.
