    On the Town: Oklahoma City Greek Festival celebrates 41 years

    Experience the food, dancing, traditions and heritage of Greek culture during the 41 st annual Greek Festival in Oklahoma City this weekend.

    Festivities will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 2101 NW 145.

    Just look at the yummy menu of homemade treats you can sample on site or buy to take home the gyro, souvlaki, patitsio (the Greek version of lasagna), baklava, loukoumades and the original Zorba sundaes. Adults can also sample the drinks Greek wines, Alfa beer, Ouzo, cognac or Greek coffee.

    Bakers at the church have been making many of these items for the last few weeks to get ready for the popular festival. If you want to make them yourself, shop during the festival at the Bakaliko grocery store, which will offere authentic Greek products and ingredients.

    The festival also includes traditional Greek dancing performances, activities for children and guided church tours, where visitors can learn more about the Orthodox faith, the church’s beginnings in Oklahoma City in 1914 and the church’s community efforts.

    OCCC Performing Arts series show



    See two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Peabo Bryson perform at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Oklahoma City Community College Visual and Performing Arts Center.

    Known as one of the premier contemporary male vocalists, Bryson is a singer, songwriter and producer, news release noted.

    His performance is part of the OCCC Performing Arts Series, which is supported by signature sponsor Oklahoma Arts Council and presenting sponsor Echols & Associates.

    Looking ahead fall harvest



    OKC Beautiful will host its sixth annual Fall Harvest Festival on from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Delmar Gardens Food Truck Park in Oklahoma City’s Farmers Market District, centered at 311 S Klein Ave.

    The event will include a variety of seasonal foods and activities. A chili cookoff will feature local restaurants and home chefs, with guest judges Apollo Woods (Bigger Than Food Foundation), Phi Nguyen (Take a Bite OK), and Juliana Lopez (OKC Latina) selecting winners, a news release noted. The Big Friendly Beer Bus will be serving local craft beers.

    Entertainment and activities will include live music by Stephen Salewon and Jenna Owens, pumpkin decorating, a mini farmers market with school garden produce and information about OKC Beautiful’s school garden program, yard games and more.


    In partnership with Fertile Ground, this is a zero-landfill event, the release stated.

    Tickets are $35 and include two beer tickets, chili and access to games and activities. Youth tickets are $20. Funds raised benefit OKC Beautiful’s environmental education programming.
