Tyreek Hill Controversial Cop Used Unenforceable Law To Handcuff Players

Tyreek Hill’s 2024 NFL season got off to a dramatic start when a pre-game encounter with police turned aggressive just blocks from Hard Rock Stadium. Despite being briefly detained, Hill still shined in Week 1, catching touchdowns only hours after being in handcuffs. Following public demand, the Miami-Dade Police Department released multiple bodycam videos of Hill’s September 8 detainment, which showed his McLaren speeding through the area. The violation ticket revealed that Hill was clocked at approximately 60 MPH in a 40 MPH zone.

Tyreek Hill’s Contentious Pre-Game Traffic Stop

Tyreek Hill, known as ‘Cheetah,’ was quickly pulled over and calmly handed over his I.D. without any resistance, admitting his speeding and asking for the ticket so he wouldn’t be late to Hard Rock Stadium. However, when Hill attempted to roll up his window, the situation took a turn. Administrative officer Danny Torres, who led the traffic stop, ordered Hill to lower his window further.

When Tyreek Hill complied partially, the officers escalated their demands, instructing him to exit the vehicle. As Hill attempted to step out, officers forcibly grabbed him, pushing him to the ground and pinning him with a knee to his back. Tyreek Hill was soon in cuffs, warning the officers of surgeries on his knee as he was roughed about. In response to the incident, Hill has retained the legal team of A. Neiman, Stephen B. Kelly Jr., and Devon M. Jacob, the attorneys known for representing George Floyd.

Miami Dolphin teammates Jonnu Smith and Calais Campbell arrived when they noticed their star in distress. Soon after, Calais Campbell found himself in cuffs. In an investigative report by the Miami Herald, it has been discovered that the reasoning for handcuffing Campbell was invalid.

Tyreek Hill Police Officer Used Inactive Law To Handcuff Calais Campbell

As Tyreek Hill sat handcuffed on a curb outside the Miami Dolphins stadium, Campbell watched the escalating scene unfold just a few feet away. He was on the phone, describing the situation as tense, which was captured on Torres’ body camera footage. Torres approached Campbell, demanding to know the owner of the Tesla X parked behind the officers’ motorcycles.

When Campbell confirmed the car was his, Torres barked orders, insisting he move it immediately or face a ticket or towing. Despite Campbell’s attempts to explain he’d prefer to just receive a ticket, Torres persisted in his aggressive demands, showcasing a complete lack of discretion. This confrontation also included a brief exchange with one of Campbell’s passengers, who pointed out that Torres was being excessively confrontational.

Later, Torres claimed that Campbell was blocking traffic and needed to relocate, providing his first flimsy legal justification for his heavy-handed approach. After several loud commands, he pulled out his handcuffs and detained Campbell, roughly forcing him to sit on the ground. While searching Campbell for identification, the player expressed that he would go whatever distance he was directed, however, he would not leave Tyreek Hill alone.

Torres then informed him about a new law requiring a distance of 25 feet, referencing a regulation that hasn’t even taken effect yet. Earlier this year, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation creating a 25-foot “no-go” zone around first responders after a verbal warning, but it won’t be enforced until January 1, 2025.

While Torres failed to cite any current laws, the closest applicable statute would relate to obstructing justice. Ultimately, Campbell was uncuffed and allowed to leave without receiving a ticket, but not without enduring a needless ordeal at the hands of an officer more interested in flexing his authority than upholding the law. Bodycam footage also revealed that an unidentified bystander was similarly ordered by Torres to move back 25 feet, and then even further to 50 feet, under the pretense of state law, further highlighting his overreach.

    Final Thoughts

Tyreek Hill and Calais Campbell are victims of a police officer who does not deserve to hold a gun and badge. Daniel Tores has been suspended numerous times for different infractions and clearly only has an interest in flexing his authority as a cop, as opposed to the real obligations of a public servant. The execution of detainment under the guise of a law that is not enforceable for multiple months is simply ignorance and arrogance.
