Actress and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reality star Kim Richards is in trouble. She is struggling to the extent that she was placed on a psychiatric hold. Those types of holds are very serious and are not administered casually. The incident is most likely believed to be tied to her continued struggle with substance abuse disorder. Richards is going nowhere good and fast. Hopefully she can turn things around sooner than later.

Kim Richards’ Struggles

Richards has been struggling with an addiction to alcohol for years. Her sister, Kyle Richards, publicly outed her substance abuse on RHOBH in 2010. She has been in and out of rehab at least once in 2011 and twice in 2015. It appeared that the reality star was doing well with multiple years of sobriety. However, it’s clear that at least in September of 2024 that is no longer the case.

The family reportedly has cut off contact with Ms. Richards after the psychiatric hold in early September. The family is trying the ‘tough love’ method as they fear that the former child actor may abuse alcohol until she passes away. Being the family member of an addicted individual can be incredibly complicated. Although this sounds like a questionable method, it might also be for the mental health of the individuals who have supported her through thick and thin.

Kim Richards revealed that her struggle began in 1991. She was 24 years old when she had her first ‘real drink.’ If your first ‘real drink’ is at 24, you likely skipped the typical high school and college days and likely had less exposure. She began drinking when she was breaking up with her second husband. A glass of wine at night turned into more and more. Alcoholism can start at any age, and no one is immune from struggling with it. It’s wonderful that she has been so open with her struggle. Hopefully that can lead to healing.

The Details On The Psychiatric Hold

Earlier this month, we discovered that Richards was placed on a psychiatric hold. She was at a Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles when she was acting incoherent and not like herself. The police were called, and they asked Kim Richards to leave. She protested and was placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold. She was ambulanced away to a 72-hour involuntary stay at a hospital to be stabilized mentally.

A 5150 psychiatric hold is an involuntary mental health care in a hospital for up to 72 hours. It is reserved for only the most serious cases when someone appears to be in a mental crisis. The holds are implemented in three circumstances: danger to self, danger to others, or grave disability (unable to meet one’s basic needs like eating or bathing). Anything that inhibits personal freedoms is controversial in America, and this hold is no different. At this time, it is felt that the pros outweigh the cons. They can be quite protective for the individual and the community.

The effectiveness of the hold could be called into question due to recent events. On September 25th, Kyle Richards called the police, asking for her sister to be removed. Kim Richards had lived in the home with her after the hold. However, due to her continued drinking of alcohol, she was no longer welcome. Allegedly, a woman at the home claimed that Kim Richards needed to leave the home, and a restraining order was in place. There was no restraining order, so the police were unable to remove the older Richards sister. The sisters were educated on the eviction process, and the police left. It’s unclear if Kim Richards is in the eviction process currently.

Conclusion

Kim Richards is currently a relapsed alcoholic. Once you are an addict, you are always an addict. It’s a daily choice to avoid your substance of choice, and that can be difficult. She was doing incredibly well after a long, often public struggle with alcohol and multiple rehab trips. Hopefully, this relapse will be the last one, and Kim Richards can begin to heal herself and regain the trust of her loved ones.
