With Summer officially over, the fall season brings not only warm weather and pumpkin spice but a new season of Saturday Night Live. But unlike other seasons of SNL, the season premiere kicking off tonight is special for creator Lorne Michaels. While the cast prepared for a new season, Michaels looked to celebrate his life’s work as the premiere marked the 50th season of the iconic show. Ready to honor stars like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, and Tina Fey, the season premiere will feature celebrities like country singer Jelly Roll.

While climbing the ranks in country music, Jelly Roll did more than prove his musical talents as he never seemed afraid to share stories of his past. And to make it even better, the country singer is more than willing to help others out. But tonight, Jelly Roll will take the stage as the legendary Studio 8H as the musical guest for the evening. As for hosting duties, that honor will go to Jean Smart. Holding a career in Hollywood for nearly 50 years, Smart appeared in hit films like Sweet Home Alabama, The Accountant, and Babylon.

Excited about the new season of SNL, fans loved the recent promo featuring Smart and Jelly Roll. Looking at the comments, fans wrote, “Jean Smart f**king rocks!!! Loved her since I was a kid! So excited she is having a renaissance of sorts.” Another person added, “I was 17 when we all got together at a friend’s house to watch the first episode. Hard to believe it’s been 50 years! Wow.”

Lorne Michaels Hints At Retirement Ahead Of ‘Saturday Night Live’ Premiere

As for the 50th season of SNL, Michaels admitted that fans are in for a treat. Speaking with The New York Times, he explained, “The 50th will be a big event. We’ll bring everyone back from all 50 years and hosts and all of that. It will be a very emotional and very strong thing. There won’t be as many plus-ones, I can tell you that much.”

While looking to celebrate his life’s work, Michaels might be looking to make his exit from the show. He hinted at the possibility of retiring, telling Entertainment Weekly, “I think I’m committed to doing the show until its 50th anniversary, which is in three years. I’d like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.”

No matter what season 50 of SNL brings, it will surely be memorable. Don’t miss SNL season 50 premiere, kicking off tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
