Multiple arrests after fight breaks out at Homecoming football game at John Glenn High School in Westland: city officials

WESTLAND (WWJ) Multiple people were arrested during a fight at a football game at John Glenn High School in Westland, according to city officials.

Westland Police have not confirmed this information.

In a statement on Facebook, Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman said he’s “aware of the reports of fighting that broke out after the Homecoming Game” Friday night (9/27) at John Glenn High School on Marquette at Wayne.

Coleman said officers from neighboring communities were called to the scene due to the “large crowd size.”

The people arrested were adults, according to a Facebook statement by Councilwoman Melissa Sampey.

“Westland Police quickly responded to handle the situation,” City Councilman Mike McDermott said on Facebook. “It is a real shame and travesty that apparent fighting and bad behavior by some individuals takes place and detracts from the football game going on.”

According to all three city officials, no students were seriously injured.

No details have been released about what sparked the fight.

“Many students, parents, teachers, and community members showed up simply to enjoy the game," McDermott said. "Sadly, incidents like this and people's behavior detracts from what people are there to play, celebrate, and enjoy."
