Ryan Murphy critics think he has a true crime problem amid Netflix Menendez backlash

Ryan Murphy recently released two TV shows based on true crime - and people have not been impressed .

The writer is known for his work on American Horror Story and Glee. He's recently leaned more into creating shows off real-life crimes in his Netflix show Monsters and his FX show American Sports Story. The latter focuses on the story of Aaron Hernandez, an NFL star who was convicted of one murder and acquitted of two others.

Monsters' first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and its current season focuses on the Menendez brothers who murdered their parents in 1989. The current season has created a lot of controversy, especially for Ryan's portrayal of Erik and Lyle Menendez .

While the brothers themselves and their family have spoken out about the show, fans online are also critical of Ryan's take on the true crime story. A Reddit user shared an article titled "Ryan Murphy's True Crime Problem Is Getting Worse," leading to many users sharing their thoughts in the thread.

Some said that they weren't a fan of Ryan for a while. "I was done with his subpar shows when he glorified Richard Ramirez in American Horror Story," one wrote, "The man has no respect."

"Man had a masterpiece with The People vs. OJ but he's a greedy little sensationalist," another added. A third blamed the genre in general, not just Ryan.

They said: "Probably because True Crime is inherently not in service to victims?? It’s a spectator sport, unfortunately. Ryan is no different from literally every other creator in the genre."

Ryan has shared his thoughts on the criticism, especially the criticism surrounding his decision to include the theory that the brothers were in an incestuous relationship. Speaking during a red carpet interview, Ryan said: "What the show is doing is presenting the points of view and theories from so many people who were involved in the case. Dominick Dunne wrote several articles talking about that theory."

"We are presenting his point of view just as we present Leslie Abramson's [the brothers' lawyer] point of view," he continued, "We had an obligation to show all of that, and we did.

Ryan also faced backlash after the first season of Monsters aired. The families of Jeffrey Dahmer's victims claims he never came to them ahead of the series' release. Errol Lindsey's cousin, Eric Perry, tweeted that the series was "retraumatizing" his family "over and over again." Errol's sister Rita Isbel also spoke out, telling Insider: "The victims have children and grandchildren. If the show benefited them in some way, it wouldn't feel so harsh and careless. It’s sad that they’re just making money off of this tragedy. That’s just greed."

Despite the backlash, Monsters has been renewed for a third season. It will focus on Ed Gein, played by Charlie Hunnam
