General Hospital fans have finally gotten some good news as it has been revealed that actress Kelly Monaco will be making her grand return to the soap opera this week.
Kelly Monaco , who plays the famous character of Sam McCall on General Hospital , was met with some shocking news this year as it was revealed that her character is being written off the show this fall . This comes as Kelly has become a beloved star of the show after portraying her on-screen character for 21 years.
But now, fans were met with some positive news as it has been announced that Kelly will be returning to the soap on September 25, according to reports from Soaps . This comes as rumors sparked that actress Lindsay Hartley was going to step in and take her place. And while Kelly will be taking the small screen once again, it has unknown whether or not her character will still be written off despite pleas and petitions from fans to keep her.
Why was Kelly fired from Gene ral Hospital?
Soap Opera Network first reported the news over the summer that Kelly was fired from the soap on August 26. According to sources, Kelly's character Sam was going to be written off and killed during the fall. Another insider added that she was axed from the show because it was "storyline dictated." This seemed to be a weak excuse for long-time fans as they argued that writers have complete control over the story and could re-write scripts at any time.
And as fans were stunned by the decision, sources claim that Kelly was equally "blindsided" by the news. And while she hasn't addressed the news directly, or explained why the decision was made, she did seemingly throw shade at the soap in a recent post. The actress called out those who fired her on the first anniversary of her ex co-star Billy Miller’s tragic death in September 2023.
In her tribute post to him on Instagram, she wrote: “I’ve got your back, and you always had mine. I will tell our story soon enough. I love and miss you and beyond.” In this, the 48-year-old star seemingly hinted that once she leaves the show she is ready to expose the behind-the-scenes secrets.

Kelly has starred as Sam McCall on General Hospital since 2003. In the soap, Sam McCall an artist-turned-investigator and the daughter of crime lord Julian Jerome and lawyer Alexis Davis. She is the half-sister of Kristina Corinthos Davis and Molly Lansing-Davis, the eldest granddaughter of Mikkos Cassadine and the step-granddaughter of Helena Cassadine.
In the series, Sam has been entangled in a number of steamy on-screen romances most notably with mobster Jason Morgan. The pair unexpectedly sparked a romance as they grew close while Sam was pregnant with Sonny Corinthos' baby.
The actor that stars as Jason, Steve Burton, later spoke about their romance and explained: "It's been a long journey for Jason and Sam. When they first got together, it wasn't really supposed to be that they got together. He was kind of helping her out with her pregnancy. After that whole time they fell in love."
Other than her romance with Jason, Sam as been involved in a number of other storylines in Port Charles including discovering she is the daughter of Julian Jerome, navigating the devastating loss of her child, and living in constant fear as she is connected to a dangerous member of the mob.
