North Carolina Clinic Owner Is Sentenced To 52 Months In Prison For Defrauding Medicaid

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Aljihad Shabazz, 45, of Kernersville, N.C., was sentenced to 52 months in prison for defrauding the North Carolina Medicaid Program of more than $4.7 million.

In addition to his prison sentence, Shabazz will serve two years of supervised release and pay $4.7 million in restitution.

Shabazz, the owner of Reign & Inspirations, LLC, a behavioral services clinic in Greensboro, conspired with others between 2017 and 2020 to submit fraudulent Medicaid claims for services never provided.

He misused personal information obtained through community programs, submitting over 1,500 fake claims, some for services supposedly lasting more than 24 hours in a single day.

Shabazz used the fraudulent proceeds for personal luxuries, kickbacks, and other expenses. After pleading guilty to health care fraud and money laundering conspiracy in June 2023, he will report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons once a facility is designated.

The case was investigated by the FBI in Charlotte, the IRS, and the North Carolina Medicaid Investigations Division, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael E. Savage and Kristina Fleisch.
