Celebrities and fans alike are giving many accolades and sad goodbyes at the loss of Dame Maggie Smith, who has passed away at the age of 89 on Friday.

In a career that spanned almost 7 decades, she created one of the great legacies in entertainment. Wherever she performed, be it the theater, television, or movies, she created unforgettable characters that are still talked about today.

Born in Ilford, Essex, England, she usually portrayed a bristly, sharp-tongued character, which was not to be taken lightly. She first became noticed in the theater, where Laurence Olivier asked her to join his new National Theater Company. For years they were friendly but fierce rivals, with many saying Olivier had finally met his match.

She has 18 nominations from the British Academy Film Awards and was nominated for the Academy Awards six times and won it twice. She has so many awards, many sites like Wikipedia created a page for her awards alone.

    Celebrities Say Goodbye:

Most will remember her from the Harry Potter series, but she was so much more. She played in the famed comedy Downtown Abbey and also made a splash with more modern audiences with Sister Act I and 2, along with Hook.

The cast of Harry Potter, Sister Act, and many celebrities were heartbroken at the loss but applauded her life and their friendships.
