Anthony Rizzo injury update: Latest news on Yankees slugger after hit-by-pitch

New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo took a pitch off his right hand during Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rizzo took a slider off his bottom hand and while he initially remained in the game, it was clear the veteran first baseman was in pain.

After getting checked out by the training staff, Rizzo stayed in the game to run the bases until Oswaldo Cabrera's bunt attempt forced the former out at second base.

When the Yankees took the field for the top of the eighth inning, Rizzo was taken out of the game. Cabrera, who got the start at shortstop, moved over to first base while Anthony Volpe came into the game at shortstop.

Boone told reporters after Saturday's game that Rizzo has a fractured finger and while it certainly creates a cloudy picture, he hasn't been entirely ruled out for the playoffs.

Boone also mentioned that it may come down to Rizzo's pain tolerance. The hand in question is his glove hand in the field and bottom hand at the plate.

If this turns out to be a serious injury for Rizzo that keeps him out of the playoffs, the Yankees will have to dig into their depth at first base.

DJ LeMahieu is currently on the injured list, and rookie Ben Rice was sent down at the beginning of September. They could also move Cabrera to first base for the playoffs.
