CHESAPEAKE CITY – Holding a lead for much of Friday night’s rain-dampened UCBAC matchup, a fourth quarter Patterson Mill rally handed Bohemia Manor its first loss of the season in a 24-10 defeat.

Trailing 10-9 in the fourth quarter, the Huskies marched down the field and scored on a rushing touchdown from R.J. Wilhelm, followed by a two-point conversion, to take a 17-10 lead.

The Eagles reached Mill’s 40-yard line on their next possession with five minutes to go in hopes of tying the ball game once more. A failed 4th-and-long attempt gave the Huskies the ball back and a 40-yard touchdown run from Junior Council sealed Patterson Mill’s third win.

“That drive just took the wind out of our sails,” Bo Manor head coach Vince Ricci said.

Patterson Mill head coach David Huryk felt the go-ahead scoring drive was a testament to his team’s brand of offense, which uses a run-heavy, Wing-T style that relies on short gains to move the chains.

“What I reminded my guys was that we don’t always need the big chunk plays to make important drives,” Huryk said. “We want to be able to stack together short gains and first downs that allow us to march our way down the field and chew off some clock like we needed to in that possession to take the lead.”

Friday night’s matchup between the two Class 1A squads began and finished a defensive game where both teams traded stops and punts. Wilhelm broke loose for a 39-yard rushing score to give Patterson Mill an early 7-0 advantage with three minutes to play in the first quarter.

Bo Manor marched the gridiron on the following drive and scored its first points of the night with a 27-yard field goal by Tucker Auer and trailed 7-3.

Neither team found paydirt for much of the second quarter. Xavier Granado capped off a 40-yard drive with an eight-yard rushing score to give the Eagles their first lead of the game with five minutes to play in the first half.

A time-consuming series from Patterson Mill’s run-heavy offense gave it a red zone chance in the final seconds of the half, but a missed field goal kept the Eagles up three as the halftime whistle sounded.

The Eagles used a defensive stand to start the second half and forced a turnover-on-downs deep in its own territory. A botched snap on the first play of the ensuing series resulted in a safety and narrowed Bo Manor's lead to 10-9.

Bo Manor moves to 3-1 on the season and will host Aberdeen (0-4) on Friday.

“We played a great game all night and I am proud of the way my team handled their business in this game and there will definitely be some things that we will clean up after film,” Ricci said. “But we have a 24-hour rule here and we will get back to work for our homecoming game next week.”
