Triple Crown Is Just In Reach For Shohei Ohtani

This has marked a monumental year in the history of Major League Baseball. Throughout the season, baseball’s renowned unicorn has broken many records and established himself in history. After founding the 50/50 club earlier this month, Shohei Ohtani has another shot at history.

As he is leading in two of three categories, Ohtani has a strong chance of winning the NL Triple Crown. Time is not on his side, however. For the Los Angeles Dodgers, only two games remain in the regular season. Will Ohtani be able to win the Triple Crown?

    Ohtani’s Triple Crown Watch

Ohtani leads the National League in home runs with 54. The only person to have more home runs than him is the Yankees, Aaron Judge, who leads all of MLB with 58. Ohtani also leads the NL in runs batted in. He is currently harboring 130 RBI while the only one close behind him is José Ramírez with 117.

There is only one person standing in his way of achieving the triple crown, Luis Arráez. Arráez is leading the NL in batting average this season with .314. Over the last week, Arráez has been rather cold at the plate in comparison to his usual performance. He had two hits over a seven-game span until Friday night when he went three-of-five.

While Arráez may be cooling down, Ohtani is heating up. Over the last seven days, he has had 18 hits. If Ohtani can stay hot over the next two days while Arráez’s power at the plate lays dormant, the Triple Crown may be his. His final two games being in the high altitude of Coors Field may be the push he needs to win. However, one person is right on Ohtani’s tail. Atlanta Braves DH Marcell Ozuna has a batting average of .308, which could ultimately catch up to Ohtani.

    History Of The Triple Crown

The Triple Crown has not been won in over a decade. The last to do it was Miguel Cabrera in 2012. Cabrera’s Triple Crown broke a 45-year drought as the Red Sox’s Carl Yastrzemski was the last player to accomplish the feat in 1967.

There have been 28 Triple Crown winners since 1878. This current 12-year drought could come to an end this season. Not only is Ohtani on the brink of excellence with the award, but Judge also has come very close to the esteemed accolade. He leads the American League in home runs and RBIs but is trailing in the batting average category.

    Focusing On MLB Postseason

Though Ohtani is closing in on yet another historical moment, his sights have not wavered on the Dodgers’ goal. For Ohtani, this is his first time making a postseason appearance. The importance of that has not been overlooked by the superstar. His goal remains to focus on the upcoming playoff series and stay consistent for his team. The accolades and recognition seem to be a result of his determination on the field.

While the Dodgers have clinched the postseason and won their division, their goal for the next two games is to feel good, keep their momentum, and stay healthy heading into next weekend. They will play Saturday night and Sunday versus the Colorado Rockies.
