HBCU Delaware State’s late-game efforts fell just short in a 44-41 thriller against Campbell at Barker-Lane Stadium on September 28, 2024. The game was a back-and-forth battle, featuring explosive plays and dramatic lead changes.

Campbell struck first with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Chad Mascoe to Sincere Brown just over a minute into the game. Delaware State quickly responded, with Marqui Adams connecting with Kristian Tate for a 60-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Jaden Sutton then broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run, giving the Hornets a 14-7 lead. Campbell’s Connor Lytton added a field goal, and Delaware State extended its advantage with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Kyree Benton, making it 21-10.

Despite the back-and-forth scoring, Campbell clawed back with Mascoe hitting Aiden Valdez for a 5-yard touchdown, narrowing the HBCU squad’s lead to 21-17 at halftime.

In the second half, Adams found Malcolm Jefferies for a 4-yard touchdown, but Campbell answered with Brown’s second score of the day, tying the game at 28. A late touchdown pass from Adams to NyGhee Lolley and a 15-yard run by Sutton put Delaware State ahead 41-37 with under two minutes left.

However, Campbell drove 79 yards in just over a minute, with Brown securing his third touchdown of the day to give Campbell the final edge. Delaware State’s last-second field goal attempt missed, sealing the victory for Campbell.

Both teams showcased impressive offensive performances. Delaware State outgained Campbell in total offense, racking up 517 yards to Campbell’s 457. The Hornets dominated on the ground, rushing for 265 yards, led by Jaden Sutton’s 198-yard effort. Meanwhile, Campbell did most of their damage through the air, with Chad Mascoe throwing for 323 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the yardage advantage, Delaware State’s 13 penalties for 119 yards hindered their ability to capitalize on key opportunities, allowing Campbell to secure the late-game victory.

Sutton was the standout for the HBCU sqaud, rushing for 198 yards and two touchdowns in the narrow loss.
