New York Mets Fall 6-0 To Milwaukee Brewers

New York Mets Starting Pitcher Jose Quintana worked around trouble in the first three innings, but it caught up to him in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases due to a single and two walks, Third Baseman Joey Ortiz hit a two-run single for the first runs of the game. Quintana would have a decent night surrendering two earned runs over 4.1 innings of work and striking out a season-high nine batters.

The Brewers would maintain a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the eighth inning when the floodgates opened. Milwaukee scored four runs in the half inning to complete the 6-0 two-hit shutout. Will the New York Mets avoid the series by winning tomorrow's contest?

New York Mets Offense In Midst Of Brutal Cold Spell

The New York Mets entered Milwaukee with their season hanging in the balance, and through two games, have not been up to the task. They have been outscored 14-4 over the first two games and have been an anemic 0-of-12 with RISP in the series. New York is 0-of-14 with RISP over their three-game losing streak. New York's pitching staff was able to muster 18 strikeouts but was let down by all parts of their team this evening.

    New York's Playoff Chances Dwindling

Due to New York's three-game losing streak, they are half a game out of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They entered Saturday in a three-way tie with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves for the final two wild card spots. Former Mets Catcher Travis d'Arnaud hit a walk-off home run to catapult the Braves into the second wild card spot. New York is now half a game back of the Diamondbacks, whose game with the San Diego Padres is still ongoing. New York's clear path to the 2024 MLB Playoffs has been muddied by their recent poor play.

    Looking Ahead To Tomorrow's Game

At the time of publication, the starting pitchers for tomorrow afternoon's contest have not been announced. The New York Mets may turn to Starting Pitcher David Peterson(9-3, 3.08 ERA) for this critical game. He has not pitched since Friday, September 20 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz also mentioned on tonight's Fox telecast that Manager Carlos Mendoza thought it was favorable to have a left-handed starting pitcher against the Milwaukee Brewers lineup.

Milwaukee will presumably use the same approach as tonight with a committee-like approach to record the required 27 outs. The team is positioning their rotation for the MLB Playoffs with them locked into the No. 3 seed. New York is 0-5 this season against the Milwaukee Brewers, and flatly cannot afford to go 0-6. The Mets need to get back on track with a victory on Sunday.
