EDISON, NJ - A moving company located in Edison Township has been fined by the Attorney General’s office for operating without a license, according to a press release. Moving With A Vision faces a $5,000 fine. They are one of the 23 unlicensed movers issued Notices of Violation due to Operation Safe Move, an undercover operation targeting unlicensed movers.

“Unlicensed movers can be a consumer’s worst nightmare,” said Attorney General Matthew Platkin, “These rogue operators are doing business outside regulatory oversight and often lack the necessary skills, experience, and insurance to protect the belongings entrusted to them. By proactively identifying and putting a stop to these businesses, we’re reducing the risk they pose to New Jersey residents.”

On June 12, investigators with the Division’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) say they posed as customers trying to move their belongings from a storage unit in Monroe Township to another location in the state.

Movers arrived to find a team of OCP investigators who asked for verification of licensure. Along with them were members of the New Jersey State Police Mobile Safe Freight Unit, who conducted motor vehicle safety inspections on their trucks, according to the AG’s Office.

Under New Jersey State Law, movers who transport materials within the state, known as Intrastate Movers, must be licensed by the Division’s Regulated Business Unit. The AG’s Office says there are approximately 309 licensed public movers in the state.

In total, 21 movers received $5,000; two are facing $10,000 fines for being repeat offenders, according to the press release. 20 of them are from New Jersey and three are from New York. In total, they will collectively pay $125,000 in fines.

“New Jersey’s legal and regulatory requirements are in place to protect the consumers and their possessions,” said Cari Fais, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs.  “We urge residents to make sure they hire a mover from the pool of businesses licensed to provide services in compliance with those requirements.”
