LSU jumped out on South Alabama from the very first play and didn't look back, punishing the visiting Jaguars with a 42-10 win to lead into the bye week. On the very first play, <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/garrett-nussmeier-46054223/">Garrett Nussmeier</a> tossed the ball to <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/caden-durham-46128016/">Caden Durham</a> in the backfield and the freshman running back turned on the jets, following a convoy of blockers for a 71-yard touchdown. Back behind the play, Nussmeier simply shrugged as the play set the tone for the rest of the game. After the defense picked up a third down stop, aided by a tackle for loss from true freshman <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/ahmad-breaux-46134346/">Ahmad Breaux</a>, LSU's offense stuck with the hot hand. Nussmeier handed the ball off to Durham who burst through the middle for an 86-yard scamper that set up a second touchdown in less than five minutes for the purple and gold. LSU completely controlled the first 15 minutes of play like they hadn't done all season, out-pacing the Jaguars 252-73 in total yards and jumping out to a 21-0 lead. Of the 252 yards the Tigers' offense put together, Durham accounted for 196 of them between the run and pass, scoring a second touchdown capping off an 11-play drive to close out the quarter. The onslaught only continued from there as the purple and gold put together two more touchdown drives while forcing South Alabama to punt a total of five times. LSU controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball like it hadn't done before, complementing the offense and defense to the tune of out gaining South Alabama 429-124 in total yards to take a 35-3 lead into the halftime break. The o-line gave Nussmeier all the time in the world to go through his reads and open up holes to allow the run game to rush for nine yards per carry. Defensively, the front seven controlled the day, constantly getting pressure on South Alabama quarterback <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/gio-lopez-46131417/">Gio Lopez</a>, racking up nine tackles for loss and three sacks. Coming into the game, the Jaguars offense had averaged eight explosive plays per game but that was severely diminished as just one pass and one rush went over 20+ yards in the first half. The Tigers also held South Alabama to 4-of-14 on third down, with many of those attempts early on going for negative yardage. Durham's 217 yards of offense and two touchdowns were the highlight reel plays but Nussmeier wasn't to be outdone either. Nussmeier spread the ball around to almost surgical precision, tossing for a career high 409 yards and four total touchdowns, including two on the ground in the first half. The only down side of the first 30 minutes was Durham walking back to the locker room a little early and not returning. It was as emphatic a start as the Tigers could not have asked for any better. For those that have watched this team for a month, it was a much needed sight. The perfect performance for four quarters wasn't to be as LSU did have a sloppy stretch on both sides of the ball. Nussmeier had back-to-back possessions to end the second quarter and in the third quarter that resulted in explicable interceptions. Consequently, South Alabama's offense woke up to begin the third quarter, marching down the field on two straight possessions.The defense would bend but not break, allowing one touchdown and then picking up a huge fourth down stop down by the goal line thanks to a powerful hit from <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/whit-weeks-46110183/">Whit Weeks</a> and <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/major-burns-46055558/">Major Burns</a>. Nussmeier and the offense would orchestrate a 99-yard touchdown drive in the second half, with <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/kyren-lacy-46085550/">Kyren Lacy</a> leaving his footprint on the game during the 12-play series. LSU will now get plenty of time to rest up for an <a href="https://247sports.com/college/ole-miss/">Ole Miss</a> team that suffered its first loss of the 2024 season on Saturday to Kentucky. The Tigers and Rebels will kickoff for a highly anticipated matchup in Tiger Stadium on Oct. 12.</div></body>
