Over four years after "The Last Dance" came out, Scottie Pippen is now releasing a documentary of his own. During an interview with TMZ , Pippen announced that he is working on a series focusing on the game ball from Game 5 of the 1991 NBA Finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.
"I think that ball really was a start of a dynasty," Pippen said. "And almost, I want to say, the end of a great dynasty in the Los Angeles Lakers, who we've known for many years in the '80s as 'Showtime' and pretty much they kind of were the show in basketball.
"I think that the Game 5 ball that I have is very recognizable to some degree and what we're trying to do is make it a real-world asset," Pippen continued. "Because I know a lot of people know about the history of the Bulls, what we were able to do in the '90s and I think this ball really sort of describes and tells a story about the start of a great run in basketball as a whole but more so for our Chicago Bulls fans and basketball fans around the world."
Pippen revealed he has held on to that ball for 33 years. The 59-year-old had grabbed it after the Bulls won Game 5 108-101 to clinch the title, believing it might be the start of something special, and it sure was.
"I think it's going to be more about the whole run of that season. I am working with a team, but my ideal is to see this ball really sort of tell a story of what it was like for basketball in the '90s and what it was like for our journey to get to that first championship."
Pippen has teamed up with Hidden Empire Films to create this documentary, which is set to come out in 2025. I will certainly be tuning in when it releases and hopefully, it will become a hit like "The Last Dance."
While that 1997-98 season will always be the most memorable one when it comes to those Bulls, 1990-91 was quite special too. They officially ended the Lakers' dynastic run that season by beating them in five games in the Finals and started their own in the process.
The Lakers had won five titles in the 1980s and the Bulls would go one better, winning six in the 1990s. Pippen certainly played his part in those triumphs. In the 1991 Finals, for example, he averaged 20.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 6.6 assists. 2.4 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.
Pippen played great defense on Magic Johnson as well in that series and I think he deserves a bit more respect for his contributions. Sure, Michael Jordan was easily the best player on the Bulls, but he didn't win those titles by himself.
What will also be interesting to see in this documentary, is how Jordan is portrayed in it. Pippen was not happy in the slightest about how he was portrayed in "The Last Dance," so I wouldn't be surprised if his former teammate isn't exactly shown in a great light in this one.
