Ohio Says Goodbye to Warm Temps, Hello to Rain!

Dreary weather and rain continue as a cold front approaches, but sunshine is on the horizon.

Northeast Ohio braces for heavy rain, shifting winds, and cooler temperatures as a low-pressure system exits.

[CLEVELAND] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:47 AM on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Prolonged Rainfall Expected Through Monday in Northeast Ohio

The Ohio Valley and surrounding areas will continue to experience overcast skies and persistent light rain throughout the day, as a weakening surface low-pressure system remains in the region. According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rainfall is anticipated to occur in the southern parts of the forecast area, with 0.05 to 0.2 inches of rain expected. Radar observations from early Sunday showed widespread light rain, which is likely to dissipate by the evening, bringing a slight improvement in conditions.

Cold Front to Move Across Great Lakes on Tuesday

Although rain will decrease by Monday, overcast skies are expected to linger. By Tuesday, a cold front will sweep across the Great Lakes, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and the possibility of lake-effect rain showers. With high temperatures expected to hit the mid-70s before the front arrives, conditions will rapidly change, especially near Lake Erie. Rain showers and gusty winds will follow the frontal passage, creating challenging weather conditions overnight.

"Isolated showers are expected to continue through Tuesday night," stated forecasters from the National Weather Service. Lake Erie could also experience 3-5 foot waves, creating hazardous conditions for boaters and beachgoers.

Lake-Effect Showers Possible Following Front’s Passage

Following the passage of the cold front on Tuesday night, cold air will surge into the region. With the drop in temperatures, lake-effect showers could develop, particularly southeast and south of Lake Erie. This brief period of rain will likely end by early Wednesday morning as conditions stabilize and dry air moves in.

By Wednesday, high pressure will settle over the region, leading to clearer skies and cooler temperatures, with daytime highs only reaching the 60s. Nights will be brisk, with lows dipping into the 40s.
