A 46-year-old Biddeford man died on Friday night after being shot.

Biddeford police received a 911 call for shots fired on Foss Street at about 10:53 p.m., Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.

First responders found an injured man, later identified as Gene Dares, suffering from gunshot wounds. They tried to administer aid, but Dares died at the scene, Moss said.

After an autopsy, his death was ruled a homicide.

Moss said there is no known specific threat to the public.

The Biddeford Police Department and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident. No additional information was immediately available.
