Today is National Coffee Day. Coffee is one of the most important and popular drinks in the world. It's an important part of the culinary world. From espresso's to cold and hot coffee drinks to that morning pick me up. During past wars, it was often one of the most precious additions to any rations or MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat).

    National Coffee Day:

The first National Coffee Day was established in 2005, with several other countries also adopting it. It was established by the Southern Food & Beverage Museum in New Orleans at the inaugural New Orleans Coffee Festival. Coffee has been around for hundreds of years and is celebrated in different ways all over the world.

Experts tell the Food & Wine website how to make the best cup of coffee with a French press.

Here is a recipe for the delicious Italian dessert called affogato. The word affogato actually means “drowned” in Italian. It's espresso coffee and liquer over ice cream. If you really want coffee overload, use coffee ice cream.

    Italian Affogato:

    Ingredients:

    • 1 shot espresso
    • 2 scoops vanilla gelato or ice cream
    • 1 splash amaretto (Frangelico, Rum, or Kahlua can also be used if you don't have amaretto).
    • Shaved dark chocolate, for serving

    Instructions:

    1. Brew the espresso. Using your desired brewing method, brew 1 shot espresso.
    2. Scoop the ice cream. As the espresso is brewing, drop 2 scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream into a small drinking glass.
    3. Add the espresso and amaretto. Pour the espresso shot and 1 splash of amaretto over the ice cream.
    4. Garnish and serve. Top with shaved dark chocolate and serve immediately.

Some will Americanize it with a little whip cream or a tad of chocolate sauce.
