Travis Kelce Makes Chiefs Franchise History on Sunday Vs. Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs aim to break NFL history this season as they look to win their third consecutive Super Bowl. It's a feat that's never been accomplished, and considering they're 3-0 entering Week 4, Kansas City is looking like a playoff contender once again.

On their way to the postseason, superstar tight end Travis Kelce is approaching some franchise records of his own. The 34-year-old tight end is the favorite pass option for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Kelce is well on his way to the Hall of Fame.

During Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Kelce made franchise history for the Chiefs. After recording his second reception in the first half, the veteran tight end officially surpassed Tony Gonzalez for most receptions in franchise history.

Gonzalez ended his career with 1,325 receptions, which is the most ever by a tight end in the NFL. 916 of those catches were during his 12 years playing in Kansas City. Kelce's fourth catch of Sunday's game was his 917th career catch for the Chiefs.

Kelce will continue to add onto career catch total, as we're only in Week 4 of the 2024 season. There's a chance he can surpass 1,000 career receptions by the end of this season alone.

With that said, it's been a bit of a slow start for the superstar tight end this season. Heading into the Week 4 matchup against the Chargers, Kelce had only recorded eight receptions for 69 yards.

The Chiefs selected Kelce in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft with the 63rd overall pick. Coming out of the University of Cincinnati, Kelce was viewed as a solid tight end with decent potential.

Instead, he's put together a true Hall of Fame career. Whenever he decides to retire, Kelce will likely be in the Hall of Fame. During his time in Kansas City, the star tight end has won three Super Bowl rings alongside Mahomes.

As of now, it's unknown when Kelce plans to retire. His contract currently doesn't conclude until the end of the 2025-26 season. However, the Chiefs' could opt to give him another extension before the deal is over.
