Sooners head coach Brent Venables was waiting 'dog years' for their most positive offensive play vs. Auburn

The Oklahoma Sooners have struggled to do anything good this season when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. The defense has pretty much carried the team, something that we really haven't seen from an Oklahoma Sooners team in quite some time.

But, on Saturday against the Auburn Tigers, the Sooners had a spark. Michael Hawkins, the true freshman quarterback who was put in to replace Jackson Arbold during their loss to the Tennessee Volunteers, has provided a lift.

He's a playmaker, and that's really all you need to say about the kid. He has guts, heart, and skill. But, he loves winning, and that's what he did on Saturday as he willed his team to their first-ever SEC win.

The offense did some good things on Saturday. It took long enough.

The offense has been bad this year. Even in their win over the Temple Owls, where they dropped 50, they still struggled with some of the basics. But, that was the first game of the year, so, it was passed on as nothing. The one thing they haven't really been able to establish yet is a good passing game, especially with the deep ball.

Of course, there was the play from Arnold to Jalil Farooq at the beginning of the season where Farooq broke his foot . But, Prior to that game, that's the only big-time explosive passing play they have had, that is until they played the Tigers.

They had a play that they had been waiting on forever.

"We've been waiting dog years for an explosive play and we finally got one," head coach Brent Venables said after the game. "Good for J.J. [Hester] too. He [true freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins] threw a perfect ball."

In the fourth quarter, just when people started to doubt Hawkins Jr. and his throwing ability, he made a huge play, sending the ball down the field to Hester for a big-time play. It was beautiful, and Venables is right, it was perfectly placed by Hawkins.

That play didn't win the game, per se, but it put them in a position to win. And, it showed that they are capable of doing the things they need to do to win on that side of the ball. And just think, what's going to happen when the Sooners get some of their weapons back? They were down their top five starting wide receivers.
