Edina High’s girls soccer team is once again the Lake Conference champion in 2024.

The Hornets clinched at least a tie for the title by winning 6-0 in a Sept. 26 match at Hopkins.

That victory boosted Edina’s Lake record to 4-0-1 and made the Hornets 7-1-5 overall. They moved to 8-1-5 with a 3-0 victory over Waconia in a nonconference match Sept. 28.

Edina spread the wealth in the win over Hopkins with five different scorers. Junior captain and midfielder Lou Ruffien led the attack with a pair of goals. Maddie McWain, Mikaela Caverly, Avery Cooper and Evie Kachmarzinski had goals.

Brenna Prellwitz was Edina’s winner in goal.

Hopkins head coach Sara Rosenblum discussed the challenge of playing against Edina: “They play very well together, tactically. Some of their players are together during club season, so there is good chemistry.”

There was a sliver lining for Hopkins in the loss.

“In the second half, we held Edina scoreless for the first 39 minutes before they scored,” coach Rosenblum said. “Edina is going to be a hard team for anyone to beat in the playoffs.”

Edina’s victory over Waconia on Saturday was another dominant performance. Hornet goals were scored by Elly Doscotch, Lillian Sexton and Lily Smoley, giving the Hornets eight different scorers for the week. Eleni McGuire picked up the victory in goal.

The Hornets have 12 positive results in their first 13 matches. Dating back to last season, when they won the state Class AAA title, they are on a 30-1-5 roll. Former head coach Katie Aafedt retired after the 2023 championship season and was replaced by Taylor Greathouse.

    Lake standings

    Edina 4-0-1, Wayzata 3-1-1, Minnetonka 3-2-1, Buffalo 2-1-2, Eden Prairie 1-2-1, St. Michael-Albertville 1-3-0, Hopkins 0-5-0.
