Last Friday, while I was waking up my daughter for school, I received an automated call stating that we had been listed for possible violence against our schools. They didn't feel it was likely but wanted to let us know "out of an abundance of caution." Needless to say, I kept her home "out of an abundance of caution." We discussed the topic school shootings and she admitted to me that they had a fire drill when she walked outside in formed lines and she legitimately wondered what would happen if a person started shooting at them. I was speechless. I never even considered such a thing when I was her age...in fact, I kinda liked drills because they got me out of class into fresh air and sunshine for a spell. As my little girl admitted to looking for places she could hide in such a situation, I had to assure her. We live in a small town, supposedly a friendly and safe place to live. Then I look at the news. The school calls. And I tremble.
