Buying a home is one of the most important money moves you can make. Perhaps the most important of your entire life. As such, you need to be smart about the home you invest in. Will your home stand the test of time in terms of value? Will your investment appreciate over time ? Or, on the contrary, will it sink in value and leave you financially worse off should you decide to sell it?
In a new study, GOBankingRates looked at the 200 largest metros to find where home values are dropping and thus will make you less money should you sell your home.
Here are other notable cities where you could have a hard time making much off your home sale in 2025:
Portland, Oregon: -0.34% ($1,829)
Houston: -0.08% ($255)
Dallas: 0.16% ($585)
Denver: 0.17% ($963)
Jacksonville, Florida: 1.1% ($3,904)
Memphis, Tennessee: 1.26% ($2,980)
Methodology: For this study GOBankingRates looked at the 200 largest metros according to Zillow and found the following: (1) August 2023 home value; (2) August 2024 home value; (3) August 2023 to August 2024 percent change in home value; (4) 1-year home value forecast; (5) August 2025 projected home value. With these figures calculated, GOBankingRates decided to look at metros with an August 2023 to August 2024 and August 2024 to August 2025 projected home value percent change below 1.00%. With these metros now isolated, GOBankingRates found the (6) 2023-25 2-year projected home value change. All data was collected on and is up to date as of Sept. 18, 2024.
