Standing on the City Pier in Southport, I could see boats lined up in the water. Most were idling, moving slow toward what was then Southport Marina.

The boats carried anglers participating in the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, and my husband had dragged me to the pier to watch them as they raced to weigh in on the final day of the tournament. We walked the marina and watched as the teams brought in their haul.

I love watching the men and women jump off the boat with their catch and run to the tent. Their smiles are full of joy — and hope. Catching the big one could mean quite a bit of money for the winning team.

I had the opportunity to cover the tournament last year, and I loved every second of it. If you have the chance, you need to check it out. Plan to go during weigh in, and it’s sure to be a lot of fun. Check out my story before you head out.

Here’s what else is happening around the county…

    The agenda

Right now, the agenda for Brunswick County is recovery. A large part of that recovery deals with the county’s roads and highways. That means detours and altered routes for motorists in the Southport area. Find out more here .

When we talk about growth, we’re usually referring to the area’s ever-growing population, but some are worried about another type of growth: house size. In Oak Island, large homes have been a topic of discussion for years, and the town council recently took a measure to curb that growth. Click here to read more.
