Boilermaker golf takes their clubs North

After both Purdue golf teams turned in middle of the pack results last week, they now head to the northern suburbs of Chicago for tournaments hosted by Northwestern.

The women’s golf team will travel to Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Illinois, where they will compete in the Windy City Collegiate Classic. 15 teams will face off in the three-round tournament this Monday and Tuesday, with five Big Ten teams entering the fray alongside Purdue.

The Boilermaker women are coming off a 6th-place finish in the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State last weekend, posting a team score of 887 (+23).

Natasha Kiel was a top performer for the Boilers last week, posting 72-76-71 through three rounds and finishing +3, good for T-13th in the tournament. Lauren Timpf also had a solid outing, posting a final score of 220 (+4) that tied her for 15th.

The Boilers have had a bipolar start to the season, finishing 1st in the opening tournament at home, followed by a last-place finish in the Annika Intercollegiate in Minnesota, to the latest 6th-place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational.

The five golfers who will participate in the team event are seniors Natasha Kiel and Momo Sugiyama, freshmen Lauren Timpf and Samantha Brown, and sophomore Jasmine Kahler.

The men’s team will head up I-94 to Lake Forest, Illinois to the former home of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club for the Windon Memorial Classic. The tournament will host 16 teams, with four more Big Ten teams joining the Boilers in the Chicago suburb.

Following a 4th-place finish with a team score of 873 (+9) in the Purdue Fall Invitational at Kampen-Cosler last weekend, the Boilermaker men are looking to improve on their season results during the three-round tournament this Sunday and Monday.

Sam Easterbrook had a phenomenal start to the last tournament, topping the individual leaderboard after the second round. However, he was not able to close the door on his tournament, posting a 76 (+4) in the final round and finishing the tournament 3 under, tied for 5th place.

Nels Surtani was another top performer for the Boilers, finishing +2 for the tournament and tying for 22nd in the individual leaderboard.

Men’s golf has had a decent start to the season, including an opening tournament win at the Island Resort Intercollegiate in Bark River, Michigan, and the recent 4th-place finish last weekend.

The only slip has come at the Inverness Intercollegiate where Purdue finished 10th of 14 teams against a field stacked with ranked SEC opponents.

The men’s tournament will wrap up after round three on Monday, and the women’s tournament will finish after the third round on Tuesday.
