Library News: Trivia fundraiser for library lovers

    By Sheila Schofer,

When I was young my siblings and I loved reading “The People's Almanac by David Wallechinsky and Irving Wallace.  Different from traditional almanacs that were mainly lists of facts, “The Peoples Almanac” aimed to be a reference book to be read for pleasure; a book that would tell the often-untold true tales of history.

We read predictions of Nostradamus, memorized famous epitaphs, learned about famous natural disasters, all the while stockpiling random bits of information. In retrospect I can see how this encouraged me to seek out information on all sorts of non-fiction topics and maybe even influenced me to become a librarian.

Perhaps you, too, have a collection of random knowledge you are looking to use. A desire to share miscellaneous facts you’ve accumulated over the years with an audience beyond your eye-rolling friends and family?

    You’re in luck!

The Ames Public Library Friends Foundation and Alluvial Brewing are teaming up for a special library-themed trivia night from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 16 at Alluvial Brewing Company.

Brains & Brews Trivia: Ames Public Library Fundraiser will feature trivia, a special Library Lager brew, prizes and a raffle.  You can register online for a table of up to 6 players at http://weblink.donorperfect.com/APLFFTrivia .

Raffle tickets for exciting prizes will be on sale during the event for $5 per chance or $20 for five—cash only!

Best of all, proceeds from the fundraiser will support programs, materials, and special events at the Ames Public Library. Support from the Ames Public Library Friends Foundation helps the library go above and beyond in serving the community, making a great library awesome.

If you’re nervous about your literary chops, don’t worry. Alluvial trivia hosts are planning a wide variety of challenging trivia with a little book-themed trivia sprinkled in.

Need to find some general knowledge books to get prepared? Try some of the titles below and sign up your team soon for a fun evening in support of your favorite library:

“The Curious Reader: A Literary Miscellany of Novels & Novelists”

    “The Handy Science Answer Book”
