Mel Gibson Gives Updates on Passion of the Christ 2, Lethal Weapon 5

Mel Gibson is reportedly searching locations for the Passion of the Christ sequel but isn’t sure whether or not he’ll film that first before the next entry in the Lethal Weapon franchise.

What did Mel Gibson say would be his first project?

Speaking to Comic Book, Gibson said that it was unknown as of this time what film he would be directing first. According to Gibson, there are still tons of hurdles to jump over for both projects that will ultimately determine what comes first.

“I don’t know, and that’s the funny thing, I mean, there’s various obstacles to getting any film up on its feet, and not just budgetary, but there’s like, there’s 1,000,001 reason why something goes and why it doesn’t,” Gibson said. “So it’s really kind of a crapshoot at this point. You know, what goes first and which came first, whether it’s the chicken or the egg.”

Currently, not too much is known about Lethal Weapon 5. However, Gibson has said that the film will be bringing back Danny Glover, and that he was directing the film in honor of Richard Donner, the director of the first four films who passed away in 2021. According to Gibson, the film will be “funny” and “pretty serious,” and will tackle “a couple of hard issues.”

The sequel to Passion of the Christ is expected to feature Jim Caviezel, who will be reprising his role as Jesus, whose miraculous resurrection will be the center of the next installment. Last year, the Oscar-winning director teased that he has co-written two different scripts, with the first one described as “an acid trip” that will take audiences to “other realms.” It is still currently unclear which of the two scripts Gibson will end up directing.

The Passion of the Christ depicted the final days of Jesus Christ’s life and his crucifixion. It also starred Maia Morgenstern as Mary, Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, Francesco De Vito as Peter, Luca Lionello as Judas, and more. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film was still a commercial success. It earned a worldwide gross of $612 million against a reported budget of around $30 million, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time before Deadpool & Wolverine surpassed it in August.
