This past weekend, I participated in the Springfield Alzheimer Walk in honor of my husband’s father.

It is a special time every year to get with family along with others who have loved ones they have either lost or are battling this cruel disease. One of the vendors this year was a woman who had written a sweet children’s book called “Sometimes Grandma Calls Me Jean” by Jill Pietroburgo. I can’t wait to add this book to the Texas County Library collection.

To kick off the month of October, all branches will have a candy jar guessing game. Go into your local branch from Oct. 7th through the 25th to guess how many pieces of candy are in the jar (without going over) and win that jar of candy. One entry per person and all ages welcome!

Also for October, it’s the Houston Branch Annual Fall Book Sale. Lots of gently used books for all ages on sale Friday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Hardbacks $1 each or really get some value and fill a Texas County Book bag for $10.  All proceeds go to fund the library.  Cash or check only please!

Dreams can become reality, and I know this to be true every time I drive past the new Houston main branch library site. Walls are going up and it is getting very exciting. There is still some ways to go, but the contractor and library board are working hard to give Texas County a beautiful new main branch!

If you would like to contribute to the new library, there are still NAP credits available for purchase.  Contact me at 417-967-2258 for information.

Yes, that IS a life-size poster of Ms. Dolly Parton in the children’s section of all Texas County Libraries!  It’s to let everyone know that her Imagination Library is now being sponsored in the State of Missouri, and every Missouri child can receive a free book every month from birth until their 5th birthday!

Stop by any Texas County Library branch or go online to imaginationlibrary.com to enroll a child.

“You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children.” – Dolly Parton

Come have a story and craft each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Houston library with Miss Tiffany. There are also LEGOS, STEM Kits, and kids’ computers available for fun any day we are open. Information about all the library branches can be found on our website and Facebook page.

New additions to the Houston shelves:

Kids: “We Found a Hat,” “This is Not My Hat” and “I Want My Hat Back” by Jon Klassen

Adult: “Only the Brave” by Danielle Steel and “Orphan Monster Spy” by Matt Killen.

Librarian Lee Ann Akins facilitates Book Club every month at our Houston branch one Saturday a month at 1:30 p.m. Dates through the end of the year are Oct. 26 and Nov. 16.  Hope to see you there!

Fishing poles and tackle boxes are available at all Texas County Library branches for check out.  This service is courtesy of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Also at our Licking branch, you can check out birdwatching backpacks courtesy of the Rolla Ornithological Society in memory of Doc Hatch.
