Santa Maria missed on its first chance to get the third win necessary to get playoff eligible.Santa Maria honored the 10 inductees into the school’s second Sports Hall of Fame class during a halftime ceremony.“We had a sharp week of practice,“ said Santa Ynez coach Josh McClurg afterward.“The defense has led us all year. The offense has been through a lot of adversity. I think that helped carry us through the second quarter.”The Pirates led 17-0 at halftime after scoring 17 second quarter points. Jude Pritchard threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Max Andrade after the Foy scoring jaunt, and Austin Willis kicked a 38-yard field goal as time ran out in the first half.The game Friday night marked the last one for both teams before they hit the road to start league play. Santa Ynez will play at Atascadero (2-3) Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in a Sunset League game, and Santa Maria will play at Templeton (2-3) at the same time in an Ocean League opener. The Santa Ynez run game often struggled during the losing streak, but the Pirates rolled up 302 yards rushing Friday night. Pritchard threw for 217 yards and a touchdown. Neither team turned the ball over.Even during the losing streak, "We improved every game," said Santa Ynez linebacker Ben Flores. "We're hoping we can use this game to carry us through (the league portion of the schedule)." “We really clicked as an offense in the second quarter,” said Santa Ynez running back Griffin Bruner.Bruner caught a Pritchard pass at the Santa Maria 30 and turned it into a 39- yard scoring play in the third quarter. He scored later on a one-yard run in the third.The Pirates scored on the first three of their four possessions in the second half. They ran out the clock on the fourth.Down 31-0, the Saints, got on the board on a 24-yard Adrian Pasos touchdown pass to Michael Chavez as time expired in the third quarter.Willis scored for Santa Ynez on a three-yard run at the 10:28 mark of the fourth quarter. A six-yard touchdown pass from Pasos to Michael Calderon Castro capped a 60-yard scoring drive for the Saints, but Bruner recovered the ensuing Santa Maria onside kick, and the Pirates drained out the clock with two first downs.The Santa Ynez defense kept Santa Maria scoreless until the Saints' last two possessions."They were pretty much who we thought they were as an offense, though they threw a little more than we expected," said Santa Ynez defensive back Ryder McClurg. "They have a really strong offense."Bruner was the leading Santa Ynez rusher with 71 yards. Austin Boucher rushed for 70 for the Pirates. Mason Skidmore was the leading Santa Ynez receiver, with five catches for 64 yards.Pritchard had a productive game after missing the Santa Ynez loss at Nipomo last week with an injury.
