NFL fans are calling for a new investigation of the San Francisco 49ers after an update on Monday of running back Christian McCaffrey's injury status.

Questions circled the 49ers after Week 1 when they listed McCaffrey as questionable to play the New York Jets on "Monday Night Football." Running back Jordan Mason hinted after the game (that McCaffrey was ruled out for) that head coach Kyle Shanahan told him the team planned to give Mason the start against the Jets.

Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the league claimed they found no evidence of a rule violation in Week 1 relating to McCaffrey's injury when they investigated the matter earlier in September.

“We looked into the 49ers’ reporting of the playing status of Christian McCaffrey for the team’s Monday night game against the New York Jets. We have found no evidence of a violation of the league’s Injury Report Policy in this matter," the league's statement read.

Per reports from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports and ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday, McCaffrey has Achilles tendonitis in both legs.

Injury updates on McCaffrey have gone from bad to worse since Shanahan first told reporters that the All-Pro running back was battling a calf injury during training camp.

The 49ers told reporters on Aug. 21 that they weren't worried about McCaffrey's availability for Week 1. Shanahan's official stance on his star running back's injury status in August came as the front office was busy with Brandon Aiyuk's contract extension.

Many NFL fans are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that the 49ers had no clue McCaffrey couldn't play against the Jets two days before the game, as updates about the former Stanford standout were bleak for the entire season almost immediately after the game.

Some of those fans want another investigation from the league.

"We find out more and more everyday about how much worse his injury is. 9ers training staff needs investigated," wrote one fan.

"The 49ers def broke some rules with this injury and should be punished accordingly. I drafted CMC the Tuesday before [the] season started and not a peep of this. How is this possible," commented another.

"The 49ers need to be investigated for falsifying healthy statuses among their players. You can’t tell me they didn’t know about [these] issues earlier," one angry fan wrote .

"The 49ers need to be investigated for keeping this a secret for so long. How can they not be willing to release information that they're required to release? Loss of draft picks at the very least," suggested one fan.

“'Questionable' for week 1 tho lol Kyle Shanahan should be fined," wrote another.

The league revealed the result of their initial investigation within a few days of a league spokesperson saying the NFL didn't plan to look into the matter.

The league could decide to take a deeper look into the Week 1 injury report as new information about McCaffrey comes to light.
