Michigan AG Dana Nessel has launched an investigation into a fraudulent pet adoption case involving falsified veterinary records.

Investigation Launched into Alleged Fraudulent Pet Adoption Scheme on RescueMe.org

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced a full-scale investigation into a potential pet adoption scam after complaints surfaced about a mysterious individual using the alias “Abby Stratiskii” on the website RescueMe.org. The alleged fraud involves falsified vaccination records for pets, misleading unsuspecting Michiganders looking to adopt animals.

The investigation stems from a May 2024 case in which Stratiskii posted an adoption listing for a dog named Toby, claiming she needed to rehome the animal due to an eviction notice caused by the dog’s barking. After two Michigan residents paid a $250 adoption fee, they discovered that Toby’s veterinary and vaccination records were allegedly falsified. According to the Attorney General’s office, this incident is linked to at least two other similar fraudulent adoption listings.

AG Nessel’s office has issued subpoenas to Facebook (Meta Platforms, Inc.), the operators of RescueMe.org, and PETIQ, LLC, a company that issued Toby’s rabies tag, in an effort to uncover Stratiskii’s true identity and bring accountability to those involved.

AG Nessel Warns Consumers About Online Pet Scams

“Animal lovers want to provide homes for pets in need,” said Nessel in a statement. “Unfortunately, bad actors sometimes take advantage of this generosity. When looking to adopt online, consumers need to be vigilant against those looking to deceive them.”

The Attorney General is reissuing a consumer alert on puppy scams, urging Michiganders to remain cautious when adopting pets online. The office has provided resources for reporting fraudulent activity and advised anyone who may have encountered Stratiskii or has relevant information to contact the Consumer Protection Team.

Consumers are encouraged to report any suspicious activities and can file complaints via the Attorney General’s online complaint form or by contacting the department’s Consumer Protection Team.
