FOUR OAKS — For the first time this season, a 3-A Quad County Conference girls golf match did not end with Fike on top as host South Johnston took home top honors Monday, Sept. 30, at Reedy Creek Golf Course.

The Golden Demons, who have won all three previous Quad County titles, settled for second on the Trojans’ home course. Fike and South Johnston tied for first place at the conference get-together two weeks ago at Lane Tree Country Club in Goldsboro but this the first time another team has won the conference weekly match this season.

South Johnston chopped eight strokes off its total from the first trip to Reedy Creek with 133, three shots better than the Golden Demons with 136. Sophomore Payton Durham and freshman Loulie Harrison led Fike, each with 44, while freshman Kensley Hill produced a round of 48.

Danielle Morgan’s 41 led South Johnston, which also got twin rounds of 46 from Reese Penny and Kimsey Bagley.

West Johnston was third with 143 behind another medalist round by Jenna Underwood, who maintained her overall lead with 39.

Hunt was fourth with 156 as Cassidy Kyles led the Warriors with 46. Morgan Radford shot 54 while Leah Hawkins posted 56.

Southern Wayne was fourth with 166, followed by C.B. Aycock with 168, East Wake with 176 and Smithfield-Selma with 181.

With their 46.5 points, the Demons own a four-point lead on the Trojans with just two matches remaining, including next week at Wendell Country Club.

West Johnston’s Underwood widened her lead over Durham in second place to 12 strokes on the drop total (in which a player drops her worst round of the season). Hill is in third place, followed by South Johnston’s Morgan and Fike’s Harrison in the topr five.
