The New York Yankees will wait to find out their opponent for the American League Divisional Series.

The Yankees finished the 2024 regular season with a 94-68 record. That was good enough for the top seed in the American League and made them one of two teams to earn a bye for the first round of the playoffs.

The Baltimore Orioles host the Kansas City Royals for the ALWC series between the top two Wild Card teams. The Bronx Bombers will play the winner of the series with Game 1 of the ALDS scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5.

    The Kansas City Royals

The Royals were one of the biggest surprises of the season. The team had failed to make the playoffs since winning the 2015 World Series. The Royals spent most of the year in a playoff position and finished the year as the second Wild Card. They are led by Bobby Witt Jr. who is likely to be one of the top AL MVP candidates.

The Royals also have three of the top 10 starters in ERA. Cole Ragans is slated to start Game 1 with Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha expected for Games 2 and 3.

The Bronx Bombers took three of four games from the Royals in June, and the team also won a three-game series against them in September.

    The Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles battled the Yankees all season long for the division title. They ultimately came up short but still secured the top Wild Card in the American League. The Orioles have one of the top offenses in the league, led by MVP candidate Gunnar Henderson and the hitter with the second-most home runs in the American League, Anthony Santander.

The two teams played four series against each other throughout the season. The Orioles won eight of the 13 games.
