Carmel does it again – First Place ranking in national report

Many Americans are drawn to small cities, preferring a quieter lifestyle with more space and shorter commutes. In fact, 31% of people in the U.S. prefer living in the suburbs, while only 16% favor big cities.

WalletHub’s 2024 report on the Best Small Cities in America highlights the top locations that offer high quality of life at affordable costs. They ranked over 1,300 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on 45 factors, including housing costs, school quality, and crime rates.

Carmel sits on top.  How did other Indiana Cities do?

Indiana stands out with four cities in the top 20: Carmel , Fishers , Westfield and Nobleville . Notably, Carmel claimed the top spot as the best small city to live in. One reason is its economy, with an unemployment rate of just 3%, one of the lowest in the country. Carmel residents rent accounts for 14% of the median household income of nearly $133,000, 110th-highest out of the more than 1,300 cities in the study. The city’s high credit scores reflect this economic strength, with a median score of 775, ranking it 18th in the nation.

Carmel also excels in health and safety. The city has one of the lowest rates of poor health among its residents, ranking fourth in the nation. It also boasts a strong safety record, with low pedestrian fatality and violent crime rates.

In addition to Carmel, Fishers, Westfield and Noblesville also provide great opportunities for families and individuals seeking a better balance between work and personal life.
