MARLBORO TWP. − Township police are seeking the owner of a trailer that was abandoned Monday night on Alberta Beach Street NE.

The Stark County Engineer’s Office on Tuesday closed Alberta Beach Street between state Route 44 (Ravenna Street NE) and Paris Avenue NE. County crews began working Wednesday morning to remove the trailer. The traffic detour is state Route 173 and Route 44.

Marlboro police investigator Rudy Samaniego said the trailer must be disassembled − rather than hauled away − due to its deteriorated condition. He estimated that the trailer was built in the 1960s.

He said a construction company in Mantua previously owned the trailer and used it as a mobile office. He still is trying to locate the current owners, who could face multiple citations and be held liable for the employee work hours spent disassembling and removing the trailer.

Samaniego said a township officer spotted the trailer at 11:50 p.m. Monday. It was blocking the eastbound lane. The department originally put out barriers and cones to warn oncoming cars.

The Stark County Engineer's Office closed the road Tuesday after assessing the situation, said Dave Torrence, chief deputy engineer.

He said the trailer removal could be completed on Wednesday.

"Evidently, it's full of trash and old debris," he said. "We're trying to be cautious and make sure there's nothing hazardous there, and go slow and make sure we don't run into anything that's going to cause a health concern or issues for our guys."

Torrence said removal could take longer if unforeseen circumstances are encountered, such as hazardous materials.

"It's kind of an unusual situation," he said. "We've never run into anything like this before. It's a bad situation."

Anyone with information about the trailer or its owner is asked to call the Marlboro Township Police Department at 330-935-2830.
