    ALBA, Texas — The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles suffered a disappointing road loss in their district opener Friday, losing to the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers in five sets. After winning the first two sets, the Lady Eagles failed to come up with one final set win, allowing Alba-Golden to complete a massive comeback.

    The first set began with the Lady Eagles jumping out a fast 7-2 advantage. The Lady Panthers then went on a 6-2 scoring run, trimming the score to 10-8.

    The Lady Eagles then scored five consecutive points, extending their lead to 15-8. Following a quick Lady Panthers point, the Lady Eagles then scored four straight points, bringing their lead to 19-9.

    The Lady Panthers then rattled off four straight points to trim the deficit to 19-13. Afterwards, a 4-1 scoring run by the Lady Eagles raised their lead to 23-14.

    Alba-Golden refused to go down lightly, embarking on a 7-1 scoring run to pull within 24-21. From there, the Lady Eagles scored the final point, winning the first set 25-21 and taking the lead.

    The second set started with the Lady Panthers getting off to a strong start, establishing an early 5-0 lead. The Lady Eagles answered with a 5-2 scoring run, trimming the deficit to 7-5.

    The Lady Panthers then scored three straight points, extending their lead to 105. After that, the Lady Eagles caught fire, embarking on a 12-1 scoring run and taking a 17-11 lead.

    After a quick point by the Lady Panthers, the Lady Eagles added three consecutive points, extending their lead to 20-12. Following another Alba-Golden point, the Lady Eagles closed out the second set with a 5-3 scoring run, winning 25-16 and extending their lead to 2-0.

    The third set began with the Lady Panthers establishing an early 5-1 advantage. After a quick Lady Eagles point, a 3-1 scoring run by the Lady Panthers raised their lead to 8-2.

    The Lady Eagles then went on a 6-3 scoring run, trimming the deficit to 11-8. This was followed by a 6-4 scoring run by the Lady Panthers, bringing the score to 17-12.

    Como-Pickton continued to fight back, going on a 6-2 scoring run to trim the score down to 19-18. Following a point by the Lady Panthers, a 3-1 scoring run by the Lady Eagles tied the score at 21-21.

    The Lady Panthers then scored back-to-back points to pull ahead 23-21. The Lady Eagles answered back with a 3-1 scoring run, tying the score at 24-24.

    Unfortunately, the Lady Panthers then scored the last two points of the set, winning 26-24. This trimmed Como-Pickton’s lead to 2-1 and forced a fourth set.

    The fourth set once again saw the Lady Panthers jump out to a fast start, taking a 6-1 lead. After a Lady Eagles point, the Lady Panthers added five straight points, increasing their lead to 11-2.

    The Lady Eagles began fighting back again, going on a 6-2 scoring run to trim the deficit to 13-8. After the Lady Panthers managed another point, the Lady Eagles used a 5-2 scoring run to reduce the deficit to 16-13.

    A 3-3 exchange by both teams then ensued, bringing the score to 19-16. The Lady Panthers then went on a 4-3 scoring run, extending their lead to 23-20.

    The Lady Eagles then scored three straight points to tie the score at 23-23. The Lady Panthers then blew three straight opportunities with 24-23, 25-24 and 2625 leads to close out the set, but couldn’t seal the deal, as the Lady Eagles tied the score at 26-26.

    Then, on the fourth try, the Lady Panthers capped off the fourth set, scoring the final two points and winning 28-26. This tied the score at 2-2, sending the game to a decisive fifth set.

    The fifth set saw the Lady Panthers once again jump out to a fast start, building a 4-0 lead. After the Lady Eagles scored back-to-back points, the Lady Panthers then went on a 7-1 scoring run, bringing the score to 11-3.

    The Lady Eagles tried to fight back again, going on a 4-1 scoring run to trim the score to 12-7. But from there, the Lady Panthers scored the last three points of the game, winning the fifth set 15-7 and capping off a comeback win, handing the Lady Eagles a bitter loss.

    Kati Calvillo recorded a 27-dig, 15-kill double-double, adding five assists and three aces. Bella Romero led the team in digs with 28, also tallying five assists, three aces and two kills.

    Sanay Diaz came away with 15 digs, four kills and two assists. Saylor Smith had the team-high in kills with 11, adding on six digs, two assists and one ace.

    Mhia Garcia led in assists with 12, adding nine digs, four kills and two aces, falling one dig shy of a double- double.

    Journey Brumley had a solid performance with 11 digs, eight assists and three kills. Lexie Rainey also had double-digit digs with 11.

    Other contributors include Aubrey Martinez, five digs, four kills and two assists; Sadie Wetzel, four kills, three assists, three blocks and three digs; and Maud Poortvliet, one dig and one kill.

    With the loss, the Lady Eagles dropped to 0-1 in district and 19-11 overall. They resumed action Tuesday, traveling to Yantis to face off against the Yantis Lady Owls.
