Entering the 2023-24 season, the Chicago Blackhawks had no idea who would play with face of the franchise Connor Bedard. Although Taylor Hall was the player many penciled in to be Bedard's Robin, Philipp Kurashev developed incredible chemistry with the 18-year-old phenom. Coming off a career-high 25 points in 2022-23, Kurashev more than doubled his production this past season.

Once a fourth-round pick by the Blackhawks, Kurashev has developed into a contributor at the NHL level. Playing all three forward spots, Kurashev played all 54 games in the shortened 2020-21 season before appearing in 67 and 70 games over the next two seasons, respectively. Cementing himself as a member of the bottom six, Kurashev earned a ton of opportunity with a depleted roster.

    Story of the Season

Philipp Kurashev started the 2023-24 season late due to an injury during training camp. Once he returned, an instant chemistry with Connor Bedard was established. Over the course of 75 games, Kurashev posted 54 points (18 goals, 36 assists) while on Bedard's right flank. It was truly a breakout season for the Swiss native.

Throughout the season, Kurashev's two-way game developed playing on Bedard's wing, but the pairing saw a revolving door at the left wing spot all season. Originally it was Taylor Hall followed by the likes of Lukas Reichel, Nick Foligno, and Ryan Donato. Through it all, Kurashev proved his importance to Bedard.

Will Kurashev repeat his season performance in 2024-25? That remains to be seen. But he should probably still be a top-six forward in some capacity this season.

    Player Grades

    Jonnie Nonnie's Grade: A

Philipp Kurashev had himself a career year and became an adequate running mate for Connor Bedard. He probably fits better as a middle-six forward on a contending team, but he stepped up to the task of helping anchor the Blackhawks' top line after injuries decimated the team in the early going. Kurashev exceeded my expectations in 2023-24, receiving a well-deserved A from me.

    Tony Marchese's Grade: A

Philipp Kurashev emerged as a top-six forward in 2023-24 and found himself paired with Connor Bedard on the Blackhawks' top line. He posted an impressive 54 points in 75 games and came just two tallies short of a 20-goal season. Arguably the Blackhawks' best offensive player aside from Bedard, Kurashev earned himself an A for his performance and a look in the Hawks' top six going forward.

    Ron Luce's Grade: A

Philipp Kurashev took a massive step forward in his offensive play during the 2023-24 season. After posting a career-high 25 points the previous season, Kurashev more than doubled those numbers while establishing incredible chemistry with Connor Bedard. Whether he remains on the wing with Bedard or not, he'll continue to be a top-six contributor if he builds upon his season. For his efforts and 54 points, Kurashev gets an A from me.

    What's On Tap Next?

Philipp Kurashev should be an important forward in the Blackhawks' top six once again in 2024-25. Additionally, this season is an important one for Kurashev with his contract expiring following the campaign. Another 50-plus point season for Kurashev could land him a huge payday and a spot on the team in the future.
