MARINETTE — A trying season for the Marinette High School girls volleyball team continued on Tuesday, as the Lady Marines fell victim to a 3-0 sweep at the hands of North Eastern Conference foe Waupaca.

Tuesday’s setback was Marinette’s 13th straight loss and marked the fourth consecutive match that the Lady Marines were unable to win a set.

Matters appeared promising for Marinette (0-7 NEC, 1-14 overall) in the early goings of Tuesday’s action, as the Lady Marines were able to build quick leads in both the first and second sets.

Unfortunately for the purple and white, momentum rapidly swung back in favor of the Lady Comets, who managed to win all three sets in relatively decisive fashion.

Waupaca (4-3 NEC, 15-6 overall) emerged victorious in set one 25-8, took set two by a 25-14 decision and wrapped up the sweep with a 25-15 win in set three.

Marinette led 1-0 in set one before an ace by Claire Bogard helped Waupaca jump ahead 5-2.

The Lady Comets ripped off a 12-0 run but the Lady Marines chipped away at their deficit thanks to a few misplayed balls by Waupaca alongside a block-kill by Olivia Hanson.

Marinette’s comeback bid proved to be short-lived however, as points from Bogard and Peyton Carlson allowed the Lady Comets to close on a 3-0 run to secure the victory.

Marinette ambushed the Lady Comets in set two after points from Jaydn Sherwood and Liz Wade helped the Lady Marines open up a 5-2 lead, but a 7-0 run nudged Waupaca ahead for good.

The Lady Marines were able to pull within two but the Lady Comets responded with back-to-back kills from Carlson and an ace by Natalie Walker to seize a 19-12 advantage.

Hanson added a kill to get Marinette within five but Waupaca once again closed on a long run, this one a 6-0 streak, that Rossalyn Wehmeyer capped off with a block-kill to hand the Lady Comets the victory.

Waupaca jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set three before points from Wade and Chloe Seymour helped Marinette close the gap to four.

Marinette was able to keep the score within seven until a kill by Bogard kicked off a 5-0 run that gave the Lady Comets a 23-11 cushion.

A poor serve by the Lady Marines gave Waupaca a chance to wrap matters up with a match-point, but a nifty tip-over by Seymour coupled with an ace off the fingertips of Bri Adamski allowed Marinette to make it a 24-15 game before an illegal touch on the Lady Marines handed victory to the Lady Comets.
