The registration period for the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery 2026 is officially open. Interested applicants can submit their applications online from October 2, 2024, at 12:00 noon EDT until November 5, 2024, at 12:00 noon EST. It is crucial to note that applicants are strictly limited to one entry per person; submitting multiple applications will lead to automatic disqualification. The U.S. Department of State emphasizes in its official instructions for the DV-2026 program , “Do not wait until the last week of the registration period to enter, as heavy demand may result in website delays. No late entries or paper entries will be accepted.”

The official instructions for the DV-2026 program are available in English, and unofficial translations will be provided in other languages. However, applicants are strongly advised to rely on the English version to ensure they follow the most accurate and current guidelines. Notably, Cuba has been declared ineligible for this year’s lottery, but other eligibility criteria remain unchanged.

To qualify for the DV program, applicants must have completed a high school education (equivalent to 12th grade) or possess the required work experience. It is vital to provide truthful information, as submitting false educational credentials can result in disqualification and potentially a permanent ban from entering the United States.

Accurate personal details are essential, including full name, date of birth, place of birth, address, and contact information, alongside a recent photograph taken within the last six months . Reusing old photographs from previous DV entries or visa applications is strictly prohibited and can lead to disqualification. The Department of State advises, “Recent photographs (taken within the last six months) of yourself, your spouse, and all derivative children included in your entry are required.”

Married individuals and those with children must include their family members’ information in their applications. A common misconception is that declaring oneself single increases the chances of selection, which is false. Failing to disclose the correct marital status or family details can cause significant issues during the visa process, including potential rejections. The Department of State cautions, “Failure to list your eligible spouse, or listing someone who is not your spouse, may render you ineligible as the DV principal applicant.”

Applicants are encouraged to apply only through the official U.S. government website. Using third-party services may expose applicants to fraud, including identity theft or financial loss. The Department of State strongly encourages applicants to complete their entry forms independently, stating, “If someone helps you, you should be present when your entry is prepared so that you can provide the correct answers to the questions and keep your unique confirmation number.”

The results of the DV-2026 lottery will be announced on May 3, 2025, and winners will have until September 30, 2026, to claim their visas. Previous DV lottery participants are also eligible to apply this year, and applicants will not need a passport for registration.

This program, managed by the U.S. Department of State, aims to promote immigration from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States, offering up to 55,000 Diversity Visas (DVs) for Fiscal Year 2026. While there is no cost to register, selected applicants will need to pay a visa application fee prior to their formal visa application, where a consular officer will determine eligibility.

The Department of State is expected to reinstate a rule requiring passport information for DV lottery applications, initially scheduled for February 2024 but now proposed for December 2024. This follows the revocation of the Trump administration’s passport requirement by a federal court in February 2022, which had significantly affected DV lottery participation.

The upcoming changes to the DV program include amending regulations to require valid passport information on electronic entry forms and updating photo submission requirements. The Department of State plans to introduce these proposed changes through the appropriate legal process, ensuring adherence to established procedures.
